July walk/Loch Lomond trip

From http://bvhill-walkers.blogspot.com/

This coming Sunday was the next scheduled date for our monthly walk - although Ian and Gordon both indicated they were away this weekend and couldn't make it. Dave is available but is booked on the 18:30 flight, so I suspect that excludes the possibility of us trying Lochnagar again - may have to try a shorter walk. Who else, apart from Dave, Colin and I, is available anyway?

As an aside, Jo and I did a bit of walking this weekend. We were staying down at the Carrick at Loch Lomond, and, on Saturday, decided to take a short drive up the west side of the loch (opposite where we were staying) to Rowardennan, where one of the trails up Ben Lomond starts. We weren't organised - no food, no drink etc - but decided to climb a little anyway. We got to just short of 800 feet after an hour or so, but quit there and came back down for some beer and food.

On Sunday, we decided to drive up the east side of the loch to Tarbet, where we caught a boat to Inversnaid and then walked south along the West Highland Way to Rowardennan. It starts off as a low level lochside walk, but climbs and falls a few times as the trail cuts off the points. We walked a total of 8.2 miles (13.2 km) in three and a half hours, with the highest point of the walk almost 500 feet above the loch, and total climbing of well over 2,000 feet:

We then caught the boat back from Rowardennan to Tarbet - a 45 minute steam - and I got back just in time to see the final hole in the Open!

Geographically, this was where we were and what we did on Sunday:
